New Research Aids for Local Family Historians
by Chris Klemmer

Was an ancestor buried in Granby? Where does one begin looking for someone’s gravestone? Try the new town-wide alphabetic index of gravestones in Granby, CT with maps of each cemetery
supplementing the Granby Gravestone Project, a collection of photographs.

Complete Gravestone Index:
Cemeteries of Granby, Connecticut by Chris Klemmer and Cheryl Klemmer shows where to find anyone buried in Granby with a gravestone and identifies the location of that gravestone on a cemetery map. In addition to documenting every name on every gravestone in Granby cemeteries, this index may provide other basic inscription information: birth and death dates, relationships, epitaphs and notes. Notes may include information gathered from a gravestone and the site, such as fraternal organization symbols and associated service markers.

Digital Photos Too:
This book, the “master index” to gravestones, is an outgrowth of the historical society’s Granby Gravestone Project, a collection of digital photographs documenting every gravestone in every cemetery in Granby. A core group of about six volunteers searched under shrubs, behind trees, and in the woods to complete this photographic census. As a completeness check, findings were reconciled with research at the local historical society and Connecticut State Archives including cemetery surveys in 1934, 1997, and  2003. The index, the maps and the full digital photo collection are available in the research library of the Salmon Brook Historical Society. For more information and research hours see www.SalmonBrookHistorical.org . The index is also available at Cossitt Library.
