Lions and Tigers and Books, Oh My! Summer Reading Club is recommended for children who can read on their own. Take a walk on the wild side and explore a jungle of books at Cossitt. Find toothsome tails/tales when you charge, crawl or slither through the Children’s collection, plus 200 state library books! End with a roaringly delicious ice cream sundae on Aug. 19 (see below) and take part in the drawing for some wild prizes.
Curious George Read-to-Me Club is recommended for infants, toddlers and pre-schoolers, with a caregiver. Our friendly little jungle monkey invites you to explore that special togetherness from sharing stories. Watch your own George “balloon,” earn a gift certificate from Granby Pharmacy and end with our Curious George Lawn Picnic and movie on Aug. 12 (see below).

Granby Public Library
Something About The Author meets on Monday, July 6, 1:30 p.m. to discuss the works of Sebastian Faulks, British novelist, journalist and broadcaster. He is best known for his historical novels set in France. SATA meets again on Monday, Aug. 3, 1:30 p.m. to discuss Nadine Gordimer, South African writer, political activist and recipient of the 1991 Nobel Prize in Literature. Copies of works by these authors are available for borrowing beforehand.
Adult Summer Book and Film Series, An Impressionistic Sweep: Explore the minds and hearts of the Impressionist painters through contemporary novels, as well as a series of documentary films. All sessions begin at 1:30 p.m.; all films will be shown at Granby Public Library, while the book discussions will be held at Cossitt Library; pre-registration is required to ensure copies of the novels. Please note dates are new.

Around the World Book Group: Monday, July 20 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss Cry the Beloved Country by Alan Paton (South Africa); and on Monday, Aug. 17, the group will discuss Holy Cow by Sarah McDonald (India). Copies of the books will be available before the group meets.
Sci-Fi / Fantasy Book Group: Wednesday, July 29 at 7 p.m., to discuss The Forgotten Beasts of Eld by Patricia A. McKillip; and on Aug. 26, the group will discuss A Princess of Mars by Edward Rice Burroughs. Copies of the books will be available to borrow beforehand.
Exhibit and Artist Talk
Wildfowl & Fish Carving: Award-winning waterfowl and fish carving artist, David Findley, will present an overview of carving techniques on Wednesday, July 15, 6:30 p.m. Sample carvings on display will include locally indigenous ducks, songbirds, birds of prey and fish. Pre-registration is required.

Bike Rodeo: Wednesday, July 1, 9:30 – 11 a.m. at Ahren’s Park. Bring your bike and join your friends for fun, and remember your helmet! Co-sponsored by the Granby Early Childhood Council. All ages welcome. No registration needed.
Meet a Firefighter: Wednesday, July 8, 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. at Granby Senior Center. Firefighters from the Lost Acres Fire Department will talk to us about their job and teach children about fire safety. Please register in advance at the library. Space is limited.
Learn to Draw a Superhero: Wednesday, July 15, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. at Granby Senior Center. Superheroes are everywhere! Matt Ryan of Free Lunch Comics will guide you through your own heroic creations. Investigate gesture, posture, emotion, reference and detail. Best for age 8 and up. Pre-register at the library, please.
Police K9 Demonstration: Tuesday, July 21, 10:30 a.m. at Salmon Brook Park. Our theme for Summer Reading this year is Every Hero Has a Story. Two of our community heroes, Police Officer Joe Malone and his K9 partner, Hardy, will give a demonstration of police dog skills. All ages welcome.
Origami Airplanes: Thursday, July 23, 1 – 2 p.m. at Granby Public Library. Learn to create paper airplanes using the origami technique. Instruction and materials will be provided. Best for ages 6 and up. Please register in advance.
Hula Hooping is FUN! Wednesday, July 29, 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. at Granby Senior Center. Have fun and get a great workout with hula hoops. Master Hooper Judi Ann Jones will demonstrate her hooping skills, then it’s our turn. We’ll have hoops for everyone to use in a range of sizes from toddler to adult. Registration is a must, as space (and hoops) are limited.
Create a Superhero Mask: Thursday, Aug. 6, 1 p.m. Make a mask and become your favorite superhero! We’ll provide all the materials you need to get creative and have fun. All ages. Please register in advance as supplies are limited.
Touch A Truck—Summer Reading Finale! Wednesday, Aug. 12, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. at Salmon Brook Park. (Rain date Aug. 13) Everyone is invited to the final big event of our Summer Reading season. The following vehicles are expected to be there: fire engine, police car, dump truck, excavator, roadside mower and back hoe, plus the Life Star helicopter, military vehicles from the Air National Guard and more! Climb on board and have fun! All ages welcome.
Wee Ones, ages 1–36 months with caregiver: Mondays, July 13, 20, 27 and Thursdays, July 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, 10:30 – 11 a.m. (No August dates.) Sing, rock, clap and bounce to nursery rhymes and board books. Sheri from the Granby Early Childhood Council leads the program. No registration required; drop-ins welcome.
