By Kathy Green

Five local students from the Dance Slipper in Southwick, owned by Brenda Barna, will be competing for national dance titles at the American Dance Awards (ADA) National Championship in Hollywood, Florida, July 4–11.

In March, the studio competed at the ADA regional competition in New Haven, and three dancers were recognized for their outstanding performances. Alexandra Klinkowski, 16, of Southwick, won the title of Dancer of the Year for New Haven (age 16–21) with her contemporary solo “Bound” choreographed by Lori Haftmann. This is Klinkowski’s second time competing nationally and winning an ADA regional title. Shannon Green, 13, of Southwick, won the title of Teen Dancer of the Year for New Haven (age 13–15) with her modern solo “Mad World” that she choreographed herself. Finally, Madeline Peling, 12, of Granby, won the title of Junior Dancer of the Year for New Haven (age 10–12) with her jazz solo “Abracadabra” choreographed by Lori Haftmann.

Two months later, the Dance Slipper had two additional title winners at the ADA regional competition in Springfield. Hannah Carrier-Molleur, 16, of Westfield, won the title of Dancer of the Year for Springfield with her open solo “Mermaid” choreographed by Brenda Barna. Also, Madelynn Brown, 13, of Granby, won the title Teen Dancer of the Year for Springfield with her modern solo “Into My Dreams” choreographed by Lori Haftmann.
