Opened in April 2015, Center Grill in East Granby has quickly become a local favorite for breakfast and lunch. Located the Center Shops Plaza (Route 20), the grill is open every day from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. serving breakfast and lunch. Specials are listed on the entrance’s blackboard.
“We serve comfort food,” said owner Rick Maholakis. “Everything is made from scratch each day, using fresh ingredients.” He is passionate about giving his patrons good food value for a fair price. “I thank the community for supporting this new business,” he said. “Though we are experiencing some growing pains, we appreciate that our patrons are coming back repeatedly as well as new patron swho are discovering us.”
Breakfast includes a wide offering: eggs cooked to your liking, French toast, omelets, home-made muffins, bagels, pancakes, home fries, fruit and oatmeal. Breakfast specials can feature French toast using challah bread, English muffin toast and sweet potato pancakes. Breakfast is served all day.
The lunch menu is varied. For heartier meals there are chicken pot pie, meatloaf, chicken gyros, as well as Swedish meatballs and egg noodles. Diners also can get sandwich platters that include patty and tuna melts, burgers and salads. There’s always a house soup of creamy lemon chicken with orzo, chicken lime chili and a lettuce wedge dressed with blue cheese and bacon bits .
Scones, cookies and cupcakes are usually available for those patrons who stop for something sweet “to go” with their coffee, lattes or malted milk shakes.
As several patrons have noted, “the portions are generous.” Diners usually leave with a carton of food they could not finish. “The home fries, wrote one reviewer on Yelp, “are works of art –cooked to a bronzed coffee-brown perfection and additive.”
Maholakis has been in the food business for over 20 years and is the chief cook for Center Grill. His crew includes two other cooks and several waitresses. The restaurant’s interior includes table and chair clusters and a a long counter.
