Two Coyotes Wilderness School brings a unique summer camp experience to Holcomb Farm

By Melissa Lopata

There is a new summer camp in town! Holcomb will be the new satellite location of a widely successful wilderness summer camp program called Two Coyotes.

Two Coyotes Wilderness School (www.twocoyotes.org) offers kids aged 5-16 unique ongoing, year-round outdoor programs, as well as summer camps. Their programs are based on the enduring wisdom of the ages and ancient wilderness skills. The school’s philosophy, which is derived from Jon Young’s acclaimed book “Coyote’s Guide to Connecting with Nature,” is nature education at its best. This fun, yet profound wilderness awareness experience and teaching method has been called “mysterious, timeless, hopeful, evocative and playful.”

Kids will have the chance to spend all day outdoors in the forest building fires, making shelters and forts, learning survival skills, creating nature art and gathering wild edibles. It will be the perfect opportunity for kids to learn how to connect more meaningfully to people and nature. The Two Coyotes camp counselors act as mentors to children by inspiring enthusiasm for learning in creative and invisible ways and by utilizing the abundance of child passions as teaching tools.

Richard Louv, the bestselling author of Last Child in the Woods is quoted as saying that, “Justin Pegnataro [executive director of Two Coyotes Wilderness School] is one of the most sensitive and effective nature educators (no, make that life educators) that I’ve met. I wish my boys were young enough to attend his school.”

Two Coyotes Summer Camp is an immersive nature education experience for kids. However, the biggest impact the summer camp experience will have on young minds is the unique positive role modeling and the opportunity for mentoring the camp offers, such as:

  • Honoring diversity and uniqueness of each individual.
  • Giving thanks and reclaiming a culture of gratitude.
  • Respecting yourself, others and the environment.
  • Developing resilience and adaptability
  • Gaining courage to try new things and challenges
  • Co-creating through cooperation and collaboration.
  • Striving to practice patience, peace, understanding, and perseverance.
  • Acknowledging and honoring elder wisdom.

Two Coyotes Summer Camp runs from July 7-25. There will be three one-week sessions. Parents can register their kids for one session or all of them. To find out more about the Two Coyotes Summer Camp experience and to register go to: www.TwoCoyotes.org.
