Bruce Porter Memorial Music Series

By Laura Mazza-Dixon

The adventures in classical music at South Congregational Church begin again this fall with a concert on Sunday, November 2, at 4 p.m., with David Garrido Cid, piano and Alice Matteson, soprano, performing Bach, Brahms, Manuel de Falla, Richard Strauss, Schumann and contemporary Galician-Spanish composer Octavio Vazquez.

The Bruce Porter Memorial Music Series was established in 2012 in memory of Bruce Porter’s leadership as music director at South Congregational Church and in honor of his vision of the importance of bringing classical music to life in the town of Granby, Connecticut.

The renowned vocal ensemble, CitySingers of Hartford, under the direction of Suzanne Gates, will appear on Sunday, March 22, 2015, at 4 p.m., with a program called Celtic Fire. CitySingers will be joined by Celtic musicians known throughout the region for their mastery of Irish harp, wooden flute, fiddle, mandolin, concertina, bodhrán, double bass, pipe organ and highland pipes.

One month later, on Sunday, April 26, at 4 p.m., the Baroque chamber ensemble Les Amies de Théodore, with Susan Allen, flute; Laura Mazza-Dixon, viola da gamba, and Anne Mayo, harpsichord, will be joined by guest artists Sudie Marcuse-Blatz, soprano; Douglas Johnson, violin, and Nancy Curran harpsichord, for a program that will include one of Telemann’s Paris Quartets and Boismortier’s cantata Diane and Acteon.

The series is held at South Congregational Church, 242 Salmon Brook Street, and is free and open to the public, with wheelchair accessibility.

Donations are welcome at each concert for the support of the series. Tax-deductible donations for the continuance of the series may be made to South Church, and sent to the church office, with BPMMS at the bottom of the check.  Please include your return address so the donation may be credited accurately.
