Special Opportunities

A Matter of Balance: Beginning April 6, Mondays and Wednesdays at 10 a.m. Have you turned down a chance to go out with friends or family because you were concerned about falling? Learn how to overcome obstacles, strengthen your muscles and make your home safer so you may regain confidence and live with less stress. Over the course of four weeks learn techniques to reduce the risk of falling with this nationally proven program. No charge.

Lunch for the Mind–First Aid for Mental Health: Wednesday, April 8, 12:30 p.m. AnnMarie Cox, Granby’s own Youth Counselor, will explain how to recognize symptoms of mental illness and help identify and understand ways to offer help in such situations. Program brought to you by the Civic Engagement Education Team, and funded in part by NCAAA, Inc. Please register by calling 860-844-5352. Cost $5. Bring your brown bag lunch to class, beverage and dessert provided.

Volunteer Fair: Co-sponsored with Citizens for a Better Granby. Wednesday, April 15, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Research shows that volunteering has many health benefits. Find the perfect match for your skill sets and meaningful volunteer work. Stay involved, be active and reach out. Several area organizations will be on hand to share volunteer opportunities with you.

April Vacation Painting Party: Tuesday, April 14, 1:30 p.m. Create your own masterpiece. With the help of local artist Irene Hilbert, paint an abstract picture. No experience necessary, fun for all ages. Cost is $25 per person, includes supplies and snacks.

Grandparent/Grandchild Breakfast: Wednesday, April 15, 8:45 a.m. Give your grandchildren something fun to do during their spring vacation—come for a delicious pancake breakfast with entertainment. Cost $3 adult, $1 child. Call 860-844-5350 and reserve early.

Italian Night: Sponsored by Arden Courts of Avon. Wednesday, April 22, 5 p.m. Experience an Italian-inspired evening: enjoy a pasta dinner with fresh garden salad and dessert, wonderful entertainment with an Italian flair will complete the event. Getting in Shape for Spring: Nutrition, Exercise and Gardening Tips with Sandee Fleet, Farmington Valley VNA. Thursday, April 16, 12:45 p.m. Get ready for spring with good eating and exercise. Gardening offers good exercise and can produce good food, too. No matter the size of your space there is a gardening technique for you: raised gardens, herb gardens and container gardens will be considered. Healthy salad will be served. Free program, lunch provided by the Senior Club.

iPads Simplified with Elin Centerwall: Tuesdays, April 7, 14 and 21 at 1 p.m. Get more from your device. Intermediate users will cover more features to make organizing your life easier. Bring your device with you for hands-on training. Class size is limited. Session cost is $15.

AARP Tax Assistance: By appointment on Tuesdays and Wednesdays through April 8. AARP Tax-Aide is the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service. Trained volunteer professionals will assist those 60 years and over with Form 1040 and the standard schedules, including A and B.  Electronic filing is available. Conversational Spanish with Fred Kahlman: Fridays at 10 a.m. For anyone who would like to practice their spoken Spanish in a conversation group setting. The goals are to help you express yourself in Spanish and to learn more about Spanish culture. Spend an hour a week expanding your conversational skills. This is a free drop-in program.

Promoting Your Good Health

Meditation Workshop with Debra Mullins: Mondays at 10:15 a.m. Meditation allows you to focus your mind and eliminate stress caused by jumbled thoughts. Join us for 45 minute sessions to experience its benefits. Sponsored by MeadowBrook of Granby.

Alzheimer’s Support Group: Second Thursday of the month at 3 p.m. Caring for a loved one diagnosed with Alzheimer’s can be overwhelming. Learning to cope with the changes in their behavior, changes in your relationship with them, and understanding how to handle it all is sometimes best explained by those who are dealing with a similar situation. Led by Peggy Coburn, Executive Director of Arden Courts of Avon. 

Healthy Minds: Coping with life’s transitions is not always easy. Situations such as the death of a loved one, failing health, strained family relationships or the stress of deciding to leave a home that is too big to manage can be daunting to face alone. Working through feelings of isolation, anxiety, abandonment or failure may ease your mind. Colleen Golnik, therapist, has the ability to help you understand and deal with these feelings so you may move forward with the better part of life. Dental Care Clinic: First Friday of the month by appointment. Licensed dental hygienist will provide dental cleanings, fluoride treatments, denture cleanings and oral health evaluation at an affordable rate. Eligible seniors may receive a subsidized rate. On Grief and Loss: Second and fourth Wednesdays at 2:30 p.m. Through discussion, sharing and creative activities this group will help you in understanding and coping with grief. Whether your loss is recent or was long ago, you will find support, information and strategies for helping you with the grieving process. Facilitated by Jane Johnson, Granby resident and creator of Bryan’s Landing and the Our Children’s Garden in Salmon Brook Park. No charge. 

Farmington Valley VNA Blood Pressure Checks: Every Thursday, 11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. in the Community Room. No charge.

Foot Care Clinic with Pedi-Care: Fourth Friday of the month by appointment. A specially trained nurse will assess feet and lower extremities, trim, file and clean nails, smooth corns and calluses, massage feet and make referrals to medical doctor or podiatrist as needed. $29 at time of service (not covered by insurance).

Reiki Sessions: Second and fourth Tuesday of the month by appointment. Half-hour session cost $20.

Chair Massage with Bev: First, third and fifth Tuesday of the month by appointment. Enjoy a 15-minute chair massage for $10. 

Grandparent Support Group: Thursdays at 12 p.m. This is a group for grandparents who are raising children. 

CHOICES Counselor: Third Wednesday of the month by appointment. Do you need help in understanding Medicare and its supplements? The counselor will help you weigh the medical plan options to find the right plan for your needs. No charge.

Medical Equipment Loaner Closet: Should you need a wheelchair, walker, cane, tub seat or other durable medical equipment, call 860-844-5352. Donations accepted.

Keeping You Informed

Ask the Doctor: First Monday of the month at 10 a.m. Dr. Peter Barwick leads the group discussion on varying health topics. The open forum invites questions. No charge.

Ask the Attorney: First Wednesday of the month at 10 a.m. What do you do when a loved one is suddenly unable to make decisions for themselves? How do you ensure that your wishes will be carried out in the event you can no longer communicate? There are documents that can be put in place to make unforeseen events a little less traumatic. Generic situations can be discussed. No charge but please register by calling 860-844-5352. 

Staying Physically Fit

Tai Chi, Yoga, Chair exercise, Cardio, Strength Training, and Pilates offered at various degrees of difficulty.

Classes are available six days a week at the Senior Center. Classes are on-going, most run for a 6-week cycle and can be joined at any time. Cost $36 for 6 weeks for residents, $40 for non-residents. Call the office at 860-844-5350 to register or find which class best fits your abilities and needs.

Setback: Tuesdays at 2:30 p.m.

Monday Morning Coffee: Mondays at 8:45 a.m. 

Community Café: Tuesdays and Thursdays at 12 p.m. Complete hot meal is served for seniors through the Community Renewal Team. Suggested donation of $2. Monthly menus are available at the Senior Center. Call 860-844-5350 by Friday noon to make a reservation for the following week.

 Senior Voices, Expressing Yourself through Poetry: Second and fourth Tuesday at 11 a.m. for six weeks. Turn everyday thoughts into written works. No experience necessary. Cost $50 for the 6-week session.

Mexican Train: Mondays at 9:45 a.m.

Artist Group: Wednesdays at 9 a.m.

Greeting Card Stamping: Third Thursday of the month at 9:30 a.m. Cost $5.

Needleworks: Thursdays at 10 a.m.

Creative Beading: Fridays at 9:30 a.m.

Club News

Camera Club: First Monday of the month at 7 p.m. Annual membership is $10.

Civic Club: Third Thursday of the month at 1 p.m.

Senior Club: First Thursday of the month at 1 p.m. Annual membership is $3.

Men’s Breakfast: Second Friday of the month at 8:30 a.m. Breakfast is $2.

Women’s Breakfast: First Wednesday of the month at 8:30 a.m. Breakfast is $3.

Breakfast will start at 8:30 a.m. with the program beginning at 9 a.m. Call 860 653-9891 to reserve your spot.

Senior Van

The Granby Senior Van provides rides for shopping and activities at the Senior Center. 

Please call Nancy Grakowsky at 860-844-5353 one week in advance for scheduling. All persons who use the van must have a valid van card.

Excursions

American Clock and Watch Museum: Wednesday, April 8, departs 9 a.m. The historic Federal Hill section of Bristol is home to the museum that contains one of the largest displays of American clocks and watches in the world. Its industry helped Connecticut become a manufacturing powerhouse of its time. Cost is $8, includes travel and entrance fee.

Taste of the Valley: Monday, April 20. Lunch reservations at Maine Seafood in East Windsor at noon. Cost is $3 for the ride, lunch is your expense.

Shopping

$3 fee for each out-of-town shopping trip.

Enfield Mall on Friday, April 1, 10 a.m.

Ocean State/Big Y on April 9, 1:45 p.m.

Manchester Shopping on Friday, April 24, 9:30 a.m.

Grocery shopping trips and in-town errands on Monday and Thursday afternoons. 

Medical/Dental/Personal Care Appointments

Local appointments (Granby, East Granby, Simsbury) may be scheduled for Mondays and Wednesdays and medical appointments out of the area may be scheduled for Fridays. The Senior Van is equipped with a wheelchair lift. There is no additional fee for local service.
